What qualities do we associate with a semi professional athlete? They train and play part time. They have a part time job. Usually involved in the lower leagues (football).
What qualities do we associate with an amateur athlete? They play for fun. It is their hobby. They are not paid, receive no cash payments.
What is a Shamateur? An athlete who receives an illegal payment.
What makes a champion? Name the four key categories. Physical Personal Facilities Background
Name the physical features associated with becoming a champion. Ideal size and shape for their sport. High levels of skill and natural ability. Good fitness and health.
Name the personal features associated with becoming a champion. Very ambitious, desire to be the best. Highly motivated to train and compete. Ability to cope with anxiety, tension and stress.
How do facilities affect you becoming a champion? Living near the best facilities will enable you to reach a better standard. Being part of a strong influential club will mean playing in a higher league. Having top coaches available and training full time helps achieve success.
How does your background help you achieve success? Encouraged by family tradition. Family support, who accept level of commitment. School tradition in a sport, achieve county and national success.
What is a role model? Someone who other people might aspire to be like, they look up to and who is seen as a good example to follow. Someone who sets standards and expectations which others would wish to follow.
What qualities should a role model demonstrate? Competing and playing fairly by the rules. Being inspirational, being able to motivate and inspire others. Inspiring a particular group (ethnicity, gender, disability) Being a good performer, a high level of technique and skill. Shaping attitudes by the way they conduct themselves in their sporting life as well as in their private life.
What pressures do role models face? Media pressure and lack of privacy. Pressure to perform at the highest level every game. The difficulty of coping with unexpected fame and money. Sponsorship commitments.
How can role models help young athletes improve their performance? Influence young players and encourage them. A good role model can be observed and recorded so that their techniques and skills can be watched over and over again. They inspire young athletes to attend training and to work hard to improve.
Name three national competitions that professional athletes compete in. The FA CUP The Heineken Cup (Rugby Union) The Challenge Cup (Rugby League)
How do you define a national competition? A national competition is when clubs or counties within the same country compete for a title within a sport.
Name three international sporting events. Summer Olympic Games Winter Olympic Games Football World Cup Commonwealth Games
How do you define an international competition? An international competition is when a Country competes against another Country. England V Australia (The Ashes)
Name the four different competition formats. Knock out League Ladder Round Robin
What is a knock out competition? A format where one team plays another with the winner progressing to the next round of the tournament and the loser dropping out of the competition.
What are the advantages of competing in a knockout competition? They are quick and easy to organise. They allow for a very high number of entries as half drop out after each round.
What are the disadvantages of competing in a knock out competition? If you lose you only get to play one game. You may need to have qualifying rounds or byes to get the correct mathematical number in order to lose half the entry during each round.
What is a bye? A free passage into the next round of the competition.
Why are teams seeded during knockout competitions? To ensure the best individuals or teams do not meet in the early rounds. The aim is to have the highest ranked players challanging in the later stages of the competition.
Name two types of knockout competition. The FA Cup Heineken Cup Challenge Cup Wimbledon
What is a League? A league involves all teams or competitors playing against each other, often twice over a period of time (season). Consists of home and away fixtures.
What are the advantages of competing in a league competition? Can cater for a large entry with several divisions. Ensures that everybody has the same number of games.
What are the disadvantages of competing in a league competition? It goes on for a very long time. It can take years to climb up through the divisions. You can end up with fixture congestion towards the end of a season (postponed fixtures due to poor weather)
Name two national competitions which use a league. Netball Super League Football - Premiership Rugby League - Rugby Super League
What is a ladder competition? A set number of players or teams are placed on a ladder, you can challenge people above you to games and then take up their higher place in the ladder if you win.
What are the advantages of competing in a ladder competition? They are well suited to racket sports such as badminton, tennis and squash. They are exceptionally simple to run and administer.
What are the disadvantages of competing in a ladder competition? Progress can be very slow. Only suitable for a fairly small entry.
What is a round robin competition? Round robin competitions involve all teams playing each other. Often used as qualifying rounds in major international events or school tournaments.
What are the advantages of round robin competitions? All teams get an equal number of matches. You can control the length of each game to ensure the event finishes on time.
What are the disadvantages of competing in a round robin competition? They are only suitable for a very small entry.
What are combination events? This is when two tournament formats are used. Mini Leagues are often used during the early stages of a tounament. This is followed by using the knockout format using quarter finals, semi finals and final.
What are the advantages of using a combination of competition formats? As many games as you like can be played. Teams may get more than one chance to qualify. It allows for a high number of teams to be involved.
What are the disadvantages of using combination formats for an event? They can take a long time to complete. There may be some meaningless games in the later stages of a qualifying event where teams have already qualified for the next stage.
What is sporting etiquette? The unwritten rules or conventions of any activity, which are not enforceable but usually observed.
Give examples of player etiquette in sport. Football: kicking the ball out of play so an injured player can receive treatment. Football: giving the ball back to the team who kicked the ball out of play. Tennis: showing your opponent the new balls before you serve. Shaking hands at the start/end of games.
Give examples of the crowd demonstrating good etiquette. Snooker & Golf: the crowd remaining silent whilst the player takes their shot. Football & rugby: respecting the other teams national anthem at the start of a game. Cricket: clapping a batter on and off the field.
What is a risk assessment? A written document that looks at the likelihood of damage, or the possible dangers involved, in carrying out a particular action or activity.
What does legislation mean? Laws, rules or regulations that are legally enforced.
Competing in sport means many safety checks are needed. Name the main checks you would consider. Check the weather conditions, the playing environment, the physical preparation of the players, apply the rules and ensure players use the correct technique when playing in their matches.
How can players physically prepare for an activity? Warm up correctly using the 3 phases. Remove all jewellery. Ensure hair is tied up. Wear specific safety equipment. Train to meet the demands of the activity. Play at the correct level to suit their ability level.
What impact could the weather have on a sporting event? Frost can leave pitches too hard to play on, these could cause impact injuries. Golf tournaments are suspended during thunder storms. Good weather can dry out cricket wickets leading to cracks, dangerous to use.
What checks should be made to ensure a court/pitch is safe to use? Check they are free from litter, glass or sharp objects. Ensure all posts are free from rust to avoid them collapsing during a game. Rugby posts must have pads. Indoor posts need to be screwed into the floor.
Why do sports have rules? To ensure players are sanctioned for dangerous conduct. Playing to the rules minimises the risk of injury to players.
