Why is it important to know the author of literary non-fiction texts? | These types of texts are, to a large extent, about the author so we need to know who has written them to truly understand what the text is about. |
Why do we refer to these types of texts as literary non-fiction? | Although they are about real people, events and places, this information is conveyed to us in a literary way. Writers will use various literary techniques such as figurative language to get their ideas across to us. |
What is meant by the term 'narrative viewpoint'? | The point of view from which the events are being narrated to us. |
What do we mean when we say that literary non-fiction texts are 'linguistic constructs'? | The writers are using language in particular ways to achieve particular effects. The reader is, in effect, being manipulated into responding in a certain way through the writer's language choices. |
What is the difference between an autobiography and a biography? | A biography is written about someone, sometimes after they have died whilst an autobiography is written by the person at the centre of the book. |
What is the purpose of travel writing? | To educate the readers about the people and places described. |
What is the difference between a floating quote and an embedded quote? | An embedded quote is part of your writing and is how you should present quotes in essays. A floating quote is separate from your writing, hated by examiners and should be avoided at all costs! |
Which part of each PEE paragraph should be the longest? | The explanation. This is the last part of each PEE paragraph and where you pick up most of the marks in exams. You should always try to explain why the aspect you have quoted has been used by the writer and the effect you believe it has in the text and on the reader. |
