Give an account of the story of Jesus' baptism. At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”
Give an account of Jesus' temptation. At once the Spirit sent him out into the desert, and he was in the desert for forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and angels attended him.
Give an account of the events that took place at Caesarea Philippi according to Mark. Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, “Who do people say I am?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.” “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “You are the Christ.” Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him. He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again. He spoke plainly about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. “Get behind me, Satan!” he said. “You do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men.”
How many days after Caesarea Philippi did the transfiguration take place? Six
Give an account of the transfiguration. After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John with him up a high mountain, where they were all alone. There he was transfigured before them. His clothes became dazzling white, whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them. And there appeared before them Elijah and Moses, who were talking with Jesus. Peter said to Jesus, 'Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters-- one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.' (He did not know what to say, they were so frightened.) Then a cloud appeared and enveloped them, and a voice came from the cloud: 'This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!' Suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus.
What is the significance of the baptism for Jesus? Turning point for Jesus: before then he had been a carpenter, now he was a public and controversial travelling teacher. Confirmed that Jesus was the Son of God.
What is the significance of the baptism for Christians? Indicates Jesus' God given authority. Demonstrates Jesus' humility, since there was technically no need for him to be baptised, as he was free from sin. Christians follow Jesus' example when they are baptised.
What do the wild animals represent in the story of Jesus' temptation? Opposition to God. They were sometimes identified with demons.
What is the significance of the temptation for Christians? --Shows Jesus had authority over Satan --Important message in times of persecution --In the season of Lent, Christians remember the temptation by giving something up, in the hope that this will increase their self-discipline and devotion to God
In what way was Caesarea Philippi a watershed moment? Before this event, Jesus was going around Galilee teaching and healing in public. Afterwards, Jesus and his disciples begin to make their way towards Jerusalem, and Jesus tries to hide from the public, focusing instead on teaching his disciples before his imminent death.
To which healing story is Caesarea Philippi sometimes compared by scholars? The healing of a blind man at Bethsaida.
How is the 'divine must' significant, both for Jesus' life and for Christians? --Jesus' suffering understood to be part of God's purpose or plan, not just a prediction --Christians can believe that their own suffering has a purpose, and this helps them cope with it.
Explain the importance of the transfiguration. --Reassured Jesus that God was with him and he was following the right path --God instructed the disciples to listen to Jesus. This came only six days after Peter rebuked Jesus at Caesarea Philippi. --Shows that suffering and glory come together.
