What is Epidemiology? • The study of how much 'dis-ease" occurs in groups (or populations) and of the factors that determine differences in dis-ease occurrence between different groups. • Epidemiology is a bit like detective work in that we try to find out why and how disease occurs. Epidemiology is about measuring health, identifying the causes of dis-ease and intervening to improve health (the state of physical, mental and social well-being).
Define dis-ease. • Encompasses any health-related event (e.g. An injury, heart attack, a death) or health-related state (e.g. Diabetes, a disability, a raised blood pressure, or quality of life). • It is easier to measure negative events or states such as death and disease than measuring degrees of positive states. • Epidemiologists count dis-ease occurrences.
Define Dis-ease Occurence transition from a non-dis-eased state to a dis-eased state
Epidemiological studies are measurement exercises involving the collection of data that can be counted or quantified. Quantitative data can be classified as: Categorical- data that is group into categories Numerical- data that can take on numerical values.
__________ is a group of people who share a specified common factor. Population
A population is a group of people who share a specified common factor. The factor could be: § Geographic § Demographic § Time period § Disease § Behaviour § A combination of all factors
How is the dis-ease occurrence calculated?
