The Past Tense is used to talk about something that started and finished at a definite time in the past. | There are two types of past forms in English: those for regular verbs and those for irregular verbs. |
The past form of regular verbs ends in – d or ed. | Rule 1. If the base form ends in a vowel and one or more consonants plus e, Add -d to the base form. –> live – lived. |
Rule 2. If a verb ends in a consonant and y, change -y to -i and add -ed. –> study – studied. | Rule 3. If the verb ends in a vowel + y, just add ed –> play played. |
Rule 4. If the verb has one syllable and ends in a consonant + vowel + a consonant, double the final consonant and add –ed –> stop – stopped. | Rule 5. If the verb has two syllables and the final syllable is stressed, double the final consonant and add – ed –> prefer – preferred. |
