Frage Antworten
Relative Molecular Mass The weighted mean mass of a molecule relative to the mass of 1/12th an atom of carbon-12
Relative Atomic Mass The weighted mean mass of an atom of an element compared to 1/12th the mass of an atom of carbon-12
Relative Formula Mass The weighted mean mass of a formula unit relative to 1/12th the mass of an atom of carbon-12
Relative Isotopic Mass The mass of an isotope relative to 1/12th the mass of an atom of Carbon-12
Fill in the blanks: The percentage _______ of the isotopes in a sample of an ________ can be found __________ using a mass __________. The percentage ABUNDANCES of theisotopes in a sample of an ELEMENT can be found EXPERIMENTALLY using a mass spectrometre.
After the sample of the element has been placed in the mass spectrometre, what happens to it? It is vaporized and ionised to form a gas of positive ions
After vaporization, how are the ions of the different isotopes in an element separated? The ions are accelerated. The heavier ions move slower and are therefore harder to deflect than lighter ions, this means the ions of each isotope are separated
The ions are detected on a mass spectrum as a mass to charge ratio, this produces a signal, what determines how large the signal is? Each ion reaching the detector adds to the signal, so the greater the abundance, the greater the signal.
Relative Atomic mass can be worked out using isotopic abundances (as percentages) how do you carry out this calculation? You times the Atomic mass of each isotope of the element by its isotopic abundance. Then you add up all the results and divide them all by 100.
