Next part of the session the examiner will look for the following skills. | The middle part or information gathering. |
Reflecting skills. The reflecting skills represent a set of interventions used to help stimulate clients to explore their thoughts & feelings related to the presenting problems. | These skills also stimulate a deeper understanding of the problem. So that the client can examine issues more objectively. |
Mirroring: A simple form of reflecting, involves repeating almost exactly what the speaker says. It should be short & simple. | Just repeat key words or last words spoken. Shows understanding of terms of reference. To much is irritating though. |
Paraphrasing: Is how we feed back to the client the essence of what has just been said using own words mixed in with a few of the clients. | It is important that the paraphrased info is accurate. Check in with the client. This builds collaboration between client & counsellor, shows interest & care. |
Summarising: Through summarising a professional counsellor puts together key themes feeling & issues. | Distillation of key issues begins to put together themes, feelings & issues that the client has presented. |
Through distillation of themes & issues & reflecting these back to the client. Counsellors begin to help clients make sense of experiences. | A summary can be used at the beginning, the end & throughout the session as appropriate. |
There are three types of summaries: | Focusing summary: Used at beginning of session to pull together info from prior sessions. |
Signal summary: Use to signal that you have captured the essence of the topic & that the session can move on. | Planning summary: To provide closure & recap progress, plans & recommendation are made. |
End the session on an upbeat note. | Make sure the client leaves the session emotional uplifted. Use praising, congratulating & affirming. |
