Would you use alkali metals for coins or spoons? No, since they are malleable (bendable) and are really soft. Soft enough to be cut with a dull knife!
How are alkali metals stored? Explain why. Alkali metals are stored in oil, as they react badly to air and to water. For example, lithium, which is usually quite shiny and silvery when cut, turns darker and more dull after a while.
Are alkali metals dense? Alkali metals are not very dense, hence the reason they float in water.
Which one is true? 1) The alkaline metals are extremely reactive. 2) The alkaline metals are not very reactive. Number 1 is true- alkali metals often respond with a very violent reaction.
Why are they called alkali metals? They form an alkali solution when placed in water. This means if you placed a universal/litmus indicator inside, it would turn into a blue colour.
True or False? The reactivity of Group I decreases as you go down. False- it increases as you go down the group.
What is formed when an alkali metal reacts with water? (answer in a word equation form) GENERAL: alkali metal + water = alkali + water EXAMPLE: lithium + water = lithium hydroxide + water
What is the difference between an alkali and a base? a base is a substance which is insoluble in water whereas an alkali is a substance which is soluble in water hydroxide: alkali oxide: base
Which side are the reactant/s on and which side are the product/s on? potassium + water --> potassium hydroxide + hydrogen potassium + water : REACTANTS potassium hydroxide + hydrogen : PRODUCTS
