Frage Antworten
What are the sub atomic particles in the nucleus of an atom? PRotons and neutrons
Where are electrons found in an atom? Shells
What makes an atom stable? A full outer shell of electrons
Which group of elements on the periodic table are stable? Group 0/Noble gases
What is a compound? A substance which has atoms of two or more elements chemically bonded together
Why do atoms bond together? To become stable/achieve noble gas electron configuration
What is an ion? A charged particle
What charge does the ion have when an tom loses two electrons? 2+
What charge does the ion have when an tom gains one electron? -1
What do we call group 1 elements? Alkali metals
What do we call group 7 elements? Halogens
What types of atoms take part in ionic bonding? Metals and non metals
What is an ionic bond? Strong electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions
What types of atoms take part in covalent bonding? Non metals
What happens, in terms of electrons, during an ionic bond? The metal donates electrons to the non metal
What happens, in terms of electrons, during a covalent bond? The non metals share electrons
Why can metals conduct electricity? Delocalised electrons can move through the structure, carrying charge.
Why do covalent substances, like water and carbon dioxide, have low boiling points? Weak intermolecular forces which dont need much energy to overcome
Why can covalent substances non conduct electricity? The molecules do not have a charge
Why do ionic substances have high melting points? A lot of energy is needed to break strong electrostatic forces of attraction
Do ionic substances conduct electricity? Not when they are solid, but they do when they are dissolved in water or are melted
What makes an ionic substance conduct electricity? The ions must be free to move and carry charge
How many bonds does each carbon atom make in diamond? 4
How many bonds does each carbon make in graphite? 3
What is graphite soft? Only forms three bonds so they layers can slide over each other
Why is diamond hard? Each carbon forms four covalent bonds which are strong
