From village to Empire (Hannibal) The River Rhone -Hannibal 1st sent a small advance force of his best soldiers to cross the river SECRETLY. -Then filled small boats and canoes with light soldiers. -Lastly, large boats were placed upstream of light boats to protect them from the full force of the current.
-While Hannibal and his troops were crossing the river, horses were towed behind the boats. -One man on each side of the stern(严肃) to guide the horses. -As the Hannibal had expected, the Gaulish tribesmen came out of their camp. -But Hannibal's advance party rushed in to attack them and they ran away. -The elephants then crossed on HUGE RAFTS covered with EARTH & GRASS. The Alps and Allobrogians - Hannibal couldn't go through the WELL-GUARDED coast road to Italy. -He took the only possible route, over the Alps. Allobrogian tribes: friends of the Romans had a large army in strong position overlooking the Carthaginians' route down from the mountains.
-He ordered fires to be lit in his camp. -left most of his army there & led his BEST soldiers to ambush the Allobrogians. -Snow was falling heavily up the Alps,he saw his men were in low spirits , cos they had suffered much. -To cheer them up, Hannibal called them together and pointed out Italy, which lay close beneath the mountains. -The path down was very narrow and steep -> treacherous path.
-Those stepped wide of the path fell down the cliff to certain death. -Hannibal ordered his soldiers to cut a path out of the snow. -A DAY later the path is wide enough for the packhorses and animals to get through. -Anyways, it took 3 days for the elephantS to get through. Hannibal was defeated -he spent the next 15 years in Italy. -Romans sent a number of armies to fight him but he defeated them all the time. -Finally, the Romans changed their tactics. -Instead of fighting him, they wore him down.
How they wear him down? -they stopped any extra soldiers or supplies getting through him & refused to fight any more {BIG battles.} -His army grew weaker and weaker with every year passed. -He knew that he wasn't strong enough to attack Rome, few of the Italian tribes joined him. -They stayed loyal to Rome. -Meanwhile, the Roman army concentrated its effort on attacking CARTHAGE.
-After staying in Italy for 15 years, Hannibal was ordered home to help defend Carthage from the Romans. -202 BC, near Carthage, he was defeated by the Roman general -> called Scipio. -Carthaginians were beaten. -So the landS in Southern SPAIN were taken by Rome. -50 years later, the city of Carthage totally destroyed . -Even the North African lands were also taken by Rome. -The STRONGEST power around the Mediterranean sea -> Rome. -> the Empire grew rapidly
-Just in 70 years, after the defeat of Hannibal, Macedonia(now south-east Europe), Greece and Asia Minor(part of Modern Turkey) came under Roman rule. -Egypt was under Roman's influence. -Some of the countries that were conquered by the Romans became provinces. -Provinces= an area that is governed as a part of a country on an Empire. -The New Roman towns called COLONIES was established. -Other neighbouring countries became allies. -A defeat of Carthage meant that Rome was the MASTER of the WHOLE Mediterranean area. -BTW the Romans still found it difficult to control all those lands.
