Machines Around Us Hamza Ahmed Year 8
What is a simple machine? A machine that makes a task easier
What can machines do? They can: 1. Change the size of a force. 2. Make things speed up. 3. Change the direction of a force.
What is effort and load? Effort is force and load is force required to do the job.
How do machines change the size of a force? Machines can multiply the size of a force, making a task easier, like using a jack to change the tyre.
How do machines make things speed up? Machines make things faster with less effort. Like using an eggbeater, the blades move much faster than the handles.
How do machines make things change direction? Machines mainly use pulleys, like when you pull the cable down and a pulley lifts the blinds up.
What are levers? A lever is a simple machine, made of a long rigid object that rotates on a fulcrum.
What do levers do? They increase the size of effort or reduce if needed making it easier, like using the claw of the hammer to pull a nail out.
How do you measure how much easier a machine makes a task? Mechanical advantage= load ÷ effort
What does a machine with mechanical advantage 2 indicate? 1. Lift twice the load you'd normally lift 2. Use half force needed to do the job
How do you calculate the mechanical advantage for levers? Mechanical advantage = distance from effort to fulcrum ÷ distance from load to fulcrum
These two statements can be combined into the principle levers. What is the principle of lever? Effort x distance (effort to fulcrum) = Load x distance ( load to fulcrum)
Levers are grouped into what classes of levers? First Class Levers Second Class Levers Third Class Levers
What is a first class lever? Levers with the fulcrum positioned between the effort and the load.
What is a second class lever? When the load is positioned between the fulcrum and the effort.
What is a third class lever? When the effort is positioned between the load and the fulcrum?
What is the unit used to measure force? newton
Which class of levers multiplies speed? Third class levers
Which class of levers multiplies force? First class levers and second class levers
The End Thank You
