Frage Antworten
Where does the energy for photosynthesis come from? Sunlight, although artificial light can also be used in experiments
Why do enzyme reactions slow down? When the temperature falls the enzymes work slower
What is meant by the term 'dependant variable? The variable that is being measured -the measurement depends on what is done with independent variable
Name three substances used for storage in plants Starch, fats and oils
What factors must be controlled in a greenhouse to improve plant growth? Light, temperature and carbon dioxide
Why are there so few animals living in very cold regions such as the Arctic? Very few plants grow there -those that do are very small, so there is little food for animals
What is a quadrat? A square frame which may be divided into a grid
How can you make sure an investigation is valid? Only the independent variable should affect the results, all other variables must be controlled
Name the solution used to test a leaf for starch Iodine solution
What is the result of the iodine test for starch? The regions containing starch will turn blue-black. Regions without starch will look yellowy-brown
What is the word equation for photosynthesis? Carbon dioxide + Water -> Glucose + Oxygen
Give three physical factors which affect the distribution of plants Three of: Temperature, availability of nutrients, water, oxygen, carbon dioxide, amount of water
Why would there be little point in heating a greenhouse on a summer's day? It will be hot enough anyway, so it would be a waste of energy. The rate of photosynthesis may stop if the temperature becomes too high
What is meant by the term 'limiting factor' in photosynthesis? Factors such as light, temperature and carbon dioxide, which might prevent the rate of photosynthesis increasing above a certain point
How can you use a quadrat to make a line transect? A line is marked between two points and then the quadrat is placed at regular intervals along the line. The organisms in the quadrat are counted
What is the difference between a mean and a median? The mean (average) is the total of all the readings divided by the number of readings. The median is the middle value of the range.
Why is the difficult to be sure an investigation in outdoor habitats is valid? There are so many variables which are difficult to control
What is meant by 'reproducible' results? A measurement is reproducible if the investigation is repeated by another person, or by using different equipment or techniques, and the same results are obtained
