State the Beer-Lambert Law for the Absorption of Radiation and Any Assumptions. | A = log10(I0/I) = Kcl Where: I = Intensity of Light Transmitted (photons s-1 m-2) I0 = Intensity of Light Incident on the Sample (photons s-1 m-2) K = Constant of Proportionality c = Concentration of Sample (mgdm-3) l = Pathlength of Light Through the Sample (cm) A = Absorbance (no units) Assumptions: There is no chemical interaction between absorbing centres. The wavelength of light incident on the sample is monochromatic. The value of Kcl is less than 0.1. |

The difference between the ground state and excited states of an electron. | A ground state electron of an element is an outer orbital electron that is in the lowest energy state for that electron. In an excited state the electron has absorbed energy from a photon and is therefore at a higher energy state. The photon can only be absorbed if its energy exactly matches the energy gap between possible electron states. |
