Frage Antworten
Resource Any part of the environment that can be used to meet human needs.
Reserve The part of the a resource that is available for use.
Non-Renewable resources. - Have evolved over time, and when they are used stock is depleted: the rate of formation is so slow it is meaningless in terms of human lifespan. - No theoretical limit on rate of use, it depends on the capacity of society to exploit them. - Fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas) and Nuclear Energy
Renewable resources - Natural rate of availability: yields a continuous flow that can be consumed in any time period without endangering future consumption, as long as current usage does not exceed net usage. - Solar, HEP, Geothermal, Wave/Tidal, Wind and Biomass. - CRITICAL: Resources from forests, plants and animal waste (requires prudent management) - NON-CRITICAL: Everlasting resources (sun, wind, tides, waves, running water).
Stock A term used to describe non-renewable resources.
Flow A term used to describe renewable resources.
Primary Energy Raw energy already present in nature (oil, natural gas, running water), used to produce secondary energy.
Secondary Energy Manufactured sources from primary energy (petroleum, electricity).
Fossil Fuels Oil, natural gas, coal - formed from plant and animal remains in previous geological periods (non-renewable).
Electricity - Created from primary fuel sources. - National grid in the UK is a network of high-voltage electrical power lines between major power stations and cities. They provide power on demand.
