"Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground." Genesis 1:26 It shows that we were made special by God (to be like Him) and so our life must be valued and not ended. It also shows that human beings have dominion – they rule over God’s creation. This shows we can use animals for testing as we have control over them but we must also care for them.
“Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.” Genesis 2:7 By giving Adam the breath of life, God gave us all a soul. The soul is part of God inside us and it means that if we kill a human being (including ourselves) we are disrespecting God.
“Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit.” 1Corinthians 6:19 The Spirit of God lives in us. Christians believe this is the case from the moment of conception. Killing a foetus or a person is killing the temple God’s Spirit lives in and is disrespectful to God.
“There is a time to live and a time to die.” Ecclesiastes 3:1-3a This shows that there is a set time for everything. God decides when we are conceived and when we die. We should not try to make that decision ourselves.
“So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you.” Luke 6:31 Treating others as yourself is a key Christian teaching. You can use it to argue that if you would want someone to help you when you are suffering, you should help them too.
“God has said: ‘Never will I leave you, never will I forsake you.” Hebrews 13:5 Christians believe that when they are suffering God will be with them to support them. All they have to do is turn to him / pray to Him.
“You shall not murder.” Exodus 20:13 This is 1 of the 10 Commandments. God says it is wrong to kill someone. This includes abortion, suicide, assisted suicide and euthanasia because it is wrong to kill another person but also ourselves. It does not apply to animals as they don’t have a soul.
“Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. … Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” Luke 12:6-7 Jesus is saying that even little birds are important to God. He then says that we are worth even more than the birds. This can be used to show that we should not inflict pain on animals but also that we are more important than animals and that maybe we should use them to find cures for us.
“I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” John 10:10 Jesus says this. It can be used to argue that if you have a poor quality of life, it is not worth living. E.g. a very disabled foetus could be aborted, as it will not be able to life to the full.
“Love your neighbour as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” Mark 12:31 Jesus says that to love other people is the most important thing to do. In this way abortion or euthanasia can be allowed. E.g. it is more loving to let a woman who has been raped to have an abortion.
“Whoever does not love does not God, because God is love.” 1 John 4:8 God is love so we must do whatever is the most loving thing in any situation.
“Hannah had [no children] … because the Lord had closed her womb.” 1Samuel 1:5 This shows that when a couple can’t conceive it is because God doesn’t want them to have children (yet). They may have to do something else, e.g. foster or adopt. Hannah (in the Old Testament) did have a baby in the end but it was not until God chose to let her have one.
“You shall not commit adultery.” Exodus 20:14 This shows that when a couple are married, they should not have a sexual relationship with someone else. The Catholic Church teaches that using donor sperm or a donor egg is bringing a 3rd person into the relationship with is ‘mechanical adultery.”
“Be fruitful and increase in number.” Genesis 1:28 God tells Adam & Eve to have children. This shows that abortion is wrong as it goes against what God wants you to do and that fertility treatment is necessary if a couple can’t fulfil God’s wish naturally.
