Marxism and the Media Disconnection between the maker and what is made. Marx believed that the media could be used for good in the right hands, but in the hands of the "dominant ideology" the message of the media could have a dangerously influential and controlling effect on the masses. Marxists believe that in capitalist society, media is used as a tool of manipulation by the ruling class over the proletarians in order to assert their ideologies and values over any opposition.
Pluralism and the Media Belief that consumers have power over the producers in the media relationship. Consumers have the power to oppose and boycott against productions in the media that they disagree with, thus meaning that that company looses favour. Producers need to listen to consumer needs and demands in order to be successful in their endeavours.
Marxism and News Media Marxist perspective very relevant when considering news presentation. In a news bulletin, it becomes very clear how much coverage is given to politics, commerce and business - all helping to define the sociey Marxists believe a country to be - consumerist, capitalist. Theory of news values, which ascribes news worthiness to events, suggesting that if an event is deemed important, it'll be given greater coverage. Doinance of politicians, businessmen and other ruling elite in news coverage serves to remind audiences of their reaffirmed status as the ruling elite.
Hegemony in the Media Coined by Gransci - refers to the power and influence held by the powerful e.g politicians. Domination can be on local scale, or larger such as dominating force of the USA on the world stage. However, hegemony can also be considered in terms of wider Marxist theory: While traditional Marxism argues that the ruling class impose a homogenous ideology upon the proletarians, hegemony questions this with ideas of class, ethnicity and gender - there can be a variety of ethnicities, polticial values, and genders at play within the same class, so how can they promote a homogenous value?
ISA Ideological State Apparatus Marxists see the media as part of the ideological power structure, claiming the media was party to the construction and maintenence on ideas/values supported in the caitalist system
