Fighting Disease - Vaccinations | - The dead or inactive form of the pathogen is injected in to the body. - Your white blood cells make antibodies which destroy the vaccine. - If the same live pathogen gets in to your body white blood cells will remember how to make the correct antibody. - Your white blood cells quickly make the correct antibody. - The antibodies destroy the pathogen before it can make you ill. |
Advantages to vaccinations | Help control lots of communicable diseases that were once common in the UK. Epidemics (big outbreaks of diseases) can be prevented if a large percentage of the population is vaccinated. That way, even people who aren't vaccinated are unlikely to catch the disease. |
Disadvantages of vaccinations | They don't always work or give you immunity. You can sometimes have a bad reaction to vaccinations e.g. swelling, fevers or seizures. |
Fighting Disease - Drugs | Antibiotics kill the bacteria causing your illness without killing your own body cells. Antibiotics do not destroy viruses e.g. flu or cold viruses. |
Antibiotic Resistance | When a bacteria becomes resistant to an antibiotic so cannot be killed by the antibiotic. Bacteria can mutate, and some of these mutations may cause them to be resistant to antibiotics. When antibiotics are taken, only the non-resistant strains of bacteria will be killed, meaning the resistant bacteria will survive and reproduce. |
How can antibiotic resistance be reduced? | DOCTORS USE LESS ANTIBIOTICS DON’T USE ANTIBIOTICS IF YOU HAVE A VIRUS IF YOU ARE GIVEN ANTIBIOTICS MAKE SURE YOU COMPLETE THE COURSE USE SPECIFIC ANTIBIOTICS FOR SPECIFIC BACTERIA |
What are painkillers? | Painkillers are drugs that relieve the symptoms of an infectious disease e.g. paracetamol, ibruprofen, nurofen. They do not cure the disease. They do not kill the pathogen causing the disease. |
