EdExcel GCSE History A Unit 2 This unit focuses on a Modern World Depth Study - one of Germany 1918-39, Russia 1917-39 or USA 1919-41.
How long is the examination? 75 minutes
How many marks are available? 57 marks
How is the exam set out? You will receive the paper of the unit you have studied. All questions will appear.
Question 1. a) - Inference (4 marks) You need to make one or two inferences from a source that is given. Make sure you are not just paraphrasing a source but actually reading between the lines. Develop your point and quote the source. You should spend 6 minutes on this question.
Sample Question: Germany What can you learn from Source A about the position of Jews in Nazi Germany? (EdExcel June 2011) In 1938 a German diplomat in Paris was shot dead by a Jew. The Nazi response to the murder was to launch an attack on Jews and Jewish property on the night of 9 November 1938. This became known as Kristallnacht – a reference to all the broken glass resulting from the destruction. Some 7,500 Jewish businesses were destroyed and over 30,000 Jews were sent to concentration camps.
Sample Question: Russia What can you learn from Source A about the Soviet Union in the 1930s? (EdExcel June 2012) Stalin introduced education reforms. Schools were told which textbooks to use, formal examinations were reintroduced and Communist ideology became a compulsory subject. By the end of the 1930s there was an emphasis on traditional values, including compulsory pigtails for girls. Higher education focused on technical and scientific learning to meet the needs of the Five-Year Plans.
Sample Question: USA What can you learn from Source A about gangsterism in the USA? (EdExcel June 2012) Al Capone had 700 men armed with shotguns and sub-machine guns. He bribed police, judges and politicians in Chicago. Capone's photograph appeared on the front cover of Time, America's weekly leading magazine. He mixed with businessmen, politicians and movie stars. The only charge the authorities could make stick against him was tax evasion.
Question 1. b) - Brief description (6 marks) You need to describe in detail between two and three key factors. This may include causes, events and results. You should spend 9 minutes on this question.

Question 1. c) - Consequences (8 marks) You need to identify and develop two to three consequences of an event - only focus on the consequences! Additionally, link and prioritise the consequences to reach higher marks. You should spend 12 minutes on this question.

Sample question: Russia 1. c) Explain the effects of the Stalinist purges of the 1930s.
Sample question: USA 1. c) Explain the immediate effects of the Wall Street Crash, October 1929.
Question 1. d) - Causation (8 marks) You need to identify and develop two to three causes of an event - only focus on the causes! Additionally, link and prioritise the causes to reach higher marks. You should spend 12 minutes on this question.

Sample question: Russia 1. d) Explain why there was a revolution against the Tsarist regime in March 1917.

Question 2. a) or b) - Change (8 marks) You will need to identify and explain two to three changes which follow a logical sequence between the dates given in the question. You will need to link and prioritise to reach higher marks. You should spend 12 minutes on this question.

Question 3. a) or b) - Scaffolding (16 marks) You will receive a list of four points to include in your answer. You will need to explain and develop them, as well as link them together. You should reach a judgement at the end prioritising them. You should spend 24 minutes on this question.

You should talk about: a) the rise of unemployment; b) the use of propaganda; c) the SA; d) the scheming of Hindenburg and von Papen.
