Frage Antworten
Name 5 colonies of the British Empire... India, The West Indies, The thirteen colonies (America), Australia, Canada, Jamaica etc.
Explain why and how Britain developed an Empire. Why? To gain power, money, trade, respect, because they could. How? Taking territory from other countries (fighting mostly). Claiming territories (Captain cook).
Why was India an important part of the Empire? Spices, Tea leaves, dye, silk. Provided a central base which was easy to trade from. More Money because of trade. Indians used for Labour, army and other british jobs.
Think of some key words or phrases that describe the middle passage... Slaves, Cramped conditions, Terrible food (gruel), Sitting in own excrement, Moving slaves to America from Africa to trade and put to work on plantations, death.
How were slaves treated on the plantations? Could work from dawn till dusk with only a half an hour break for lunch, Split from friends and family and names changed, If working in the field then put in a gang depending on ability,Could work in the house as maid or driver but usually longer hours, hard labour if in field and treated as dirt because the british believed that they were superior because of skin colour.
What were the main reasons for the abolition of the slave trade? Freed slaves telling tales of life on plantations. William Wilberforce (working through parliament). Slavery stopped making so much profit/money. People realised all the suffering of slaves and began to think about human rights more. Petitions. When slaves are free they work harder then spend their money on british goods which is good for the economy.
What were the main reasons for the abolition of slavery? Changing economic interests. Resistance by enslaved people (passive and Active). Parliamentary reform. Abolition campaigns.
Why did people want reform of parliament in 19th Century? To try to solve the problems in parliament: Silly constituencies (like bossiney, only had 1 voter!), Voting was held openly so electors could be bribed about who to vote for, Only 5% of the population could vote and no women could vote, Scotland with a population of over 2 million only had 4000 voters, Land owners could instruct tenants to vote for the candidate that the landowners wanted, Most MPs were wealthy land owners who were elected by only a few people, some big towns didn't have MPs like Leeds and Manchester, you didn't vote for a party (there were none) but instead voted for a candidate.
Who were the chartists? Moral force chartists: led by William Lovett, held peaceful demonstrations and signed petitions. Physical force chartists: Led by Fergus O'Connor, they tried to achieve the chartist aims by violence like the Newport rising where a chartist leader was set free from prison. Thirty people died.
What did the Chartists demand? Vote for all men over 21 Constituencies all the same size Secret Ballot MPs to be paid No property qualifications for MPs Elections held annually
Why did the Chartists fail? The chartists tried to achieve to many aims at once so parliament refused. Also the Physical force chartists meant that overall the chartists weren't taken seriously. Also 1 petition sent to parliament was claimed that it had 5 million signatures. It actually had 1,975,496 signatures. On some sheets there were lots of signatures in the same handwriting and some weren't even era names. Queen Victoria's signature was also forged.
