  • the forge of steele.
  • The first step of this process is to give the steel de shape of the ax, this process consist of subjecting the red-hot heated steel block to a press which hits in repeated ocations the block to give to it the desired shape and the forger must move the piece in many diferentt ways causing the block to get the desired shape. This process has to be made with the material at high temperature so that it resist the hits by the press because if this process was done with the peace at normal temperature it will broke.
  • the second step was to make the whole where the ax handle goes. For this a garned was used, it was welded to a steel handle which was shaped by forging it while it was red-hot heated, whit this two pieces together the principal piece was heated again and the garnet was hammered against this piece causing the whole to be done. after this step it was necessary to cut some surplus of material because this piece widened and if the forger proceed it was going to be harder to give the ax the wanted shape. this also help that the polishing and sharpening process where easier. after the excess was removed the ax was re shaped.
  • once having the desired shape, the annealing process was made, this process consis on heating up the main piece again to a very very high temperature and allowing it to cool slowly, this process end when the material reaches room temperature.
  • then the grindings are carried out, this process consist of using machines either polishing or sanders, which help to remove the slag (external layer of material). In addition to shaping and sanding the ax, it get a more detailed finish. with a similar method the back part of the ax was outlined to give a better appearance to the piece. then the forger proceed with a heat treatment and normalization cycle that consist of heating the piece between 30 or 60 degrees celsius above the critical temperature and maintaining this temperature to achieve the transformation into austenite, that is the correct ordering method for atoms of iron and carbon, then it is allowed to cool at room temperature and at the end of this process a piece with an uniform structure and more tenacious is obtained. this process are carried out prior to tempering the piece.
  • once again the sheet is carried to very high temperatures and then it is introduced in oil and it causes a rapid decrease in the temperature of the sheet achieving a greater hardness. then the piece is put in an other oven but this time at a lowe temperature but for a long time in order to achieve the desired hardness and it culminates with a blade ready to be sharpened and assembled with its handle and the ax is ready.
