China had already suffered from this and that is why Japan wanted to have seclusion from the rest of the world.
Because they knew about China´s humiliation in the Opium War, Japan decided to agree on treading with the US.

Japan & Treaties
In 1858 Japan signed the Treaty of Amity and Commerce with the USA.
Japan also signed other treaties with Britain, Russia and France. They were known as the Unequal treaties.
The Imperial court opposed to the treaties.
The nationalist wanted seclusion but Japan was pressured by other countries to sign treaties with the Western nations.
