Tokugawa Yoshinobu (Keiki) 

Last of the shogun in 1866.  Attempted to modernize Japan.  Other (Samurai) clans opposed to his reforms.  He resigned in 1867. Meiji Emperor gave him the privilege to be a Prince for the services he made for Japan.

Trading with Japan 

USA was really interested in trading with Japan.  USA´s first two attempts of threatening Japan failed.  GUN-BOAT DIPLOMACY: The US. (Commodore Perry) sent two warships.  US. threatened to come back with more warships if Japan didn't accept to trade with them.  China had already suffered from this and that is why Japan wanted to have seclusion from the rest of the world.

Japan opening to the world  

Because they knew about China´s humiliation in the Opium War, Japan decided to agree on treading with the US.  Treaty of Kanagawa (1854).  Japan opened two ports and gave the US the priority.  Japan´s seclusion ended and it turned out to be a rising for Japan to convert into a international Power. 

Japan & Treaties 

In 1858 Japan signed the Treaty of Amity and Commerce with the USA.  Japan also signed other treaties with Britain, Russia and France. They were known as the Unequal treaties.  The Imperial court opposed to the treaties.  The nationalist wanted seclusion but Japan was pressured by other countries to sign treaties with the Western nations.
