    19 .6 Verbs followed by -mg form or infinitive with a difference in meaningCommon verbs that we use with different meanings whenfollowed by -ing form or infinitive are remember, forget,regret, stop and try.We use remember/forget+ -ing when the action or eventtook place before the remembering or forgetting.I remember meeting him at a party. (I met him and I now remember that.)• We use remember/forget+ infinitive when the action orevent took place after the remembering or forgetting.I remembered to ring the doctor. (I remembered and then I rang the doctor.)
    • regret+ -ing means 'be sorry about an action in the past'.I regret selling my car.• regret+ infinitive means 'be sorry about a presentsituation'.I regret to inform you that your car hos been stolen.• stop+ -ing means 'give up doing or cease todo something'.I stopped drinking coffee because it kept me awoke at night. • stop+ infinitive means 'stop doing something in order todo something else'.We stopped to have a coffee on the way home.• try+ -ing means that the action is an experiment whichmay or may not be successful.Try studying at a different time of day- it might suit you better. • try+ infinitive means 'make an effort even though theaction may be difficult or impossible'.Try to study for at least three hours a day.
