FYI: This was written by a BU SMG student, with some advice from few other Terriers. So whether you’re contemplating applying or at BU right now struggling through exams, this post is for you. As any BU student will tell you, BU is definitely one of the best colleges in Boston, and America.
1. Boston (a.k.a. Beantown) is the best college town
Boston is one of the best college towns in America, with over 250,000 students and 100 different colleges and universities. Not only does Boston have the feel of a college town, but it is also a metropolitan city, so you can easily get around on the T, go shopping on Newbury Street, and eat delicious food in the North End.
2. Sunset Cantina
Do I even need to say any more? It is hands down one of the best places in Boston to get nachos, tequila shots, and margaritas, and it is right on campus. But seriously, can we take a moment to appreciate the XXL South of the Border Fiesta with pulled pork?
3. Diverse Student Body
With over 16,000 undergrad, you are bound to find someone who shares the same interests, and there is probably even a club for it too. BU has over 500 student organizations, ranging from club sports to Astronomy club. And who knows, the person that you’re sitting next to in class or on the bus may be the next Julianne Moore.
See how much you you know about BU’s diverse alumni. Go through these flashcards and see if you can identity each of these famous BU alumni/attendees and which college they attended.
4. Marathon Monday (a.k.a. Patriot’s Day)
A day full of fun, sun and good times. Every year in April the Boston Marathon run’s right through BU’s campus and everyone in Boston gets the day off to enjoy one of the world’s largest marathons. The marathon seriously demonstrates the strength of the community, as everyone in Boston shows their city pride. This is the one day a year you can guarantee everyone will be up early to party and cheer on the runners in the marathon.
5. Study Abroad Programs
BU was one of the first universities to offer a study abroad program, and offers a huge variety of programs across the globe. Every year, students from not only BU but also 150 other universities go abroad to the 30 different cities, and 6 continents that there are programs in. Some programs also offer the opportunity to intern while abroad and get to experience different work culture.
6. The BU Pub
What other school has a student pub, let alone a student pub in a castle? The BU Pub is a great place to hang or get a bite to eat between classes, and you can even get ‘Knighted.’ The Knight’s Quest has been a BU tradition since 1988 and entails 50 different kinds of beers. If one completes the quest, they get their own knighting ceremony, and a personalized pewter mug!
7. Volunteer Opportunities with the CSC
The Community Service Center at BU offers so many opportunities to volunteer not only in Boston, but also across the country. Before the semester starts, incoming freshman can participate in the First Year Student Outreach Program (FYSOP), where he/she gets to volunteer in Boston, get acclimated with the city, and make long lasting friendships with other students! The CSC also offers an Alternative Spring Break program (ASB), where students get to spend a week volunteering in one of the 39 different locations offered across the US and Puerto Rico.
8. Lobster Night
Boston University has three different dining halls, each with their own quirks and specialties, like the West Burger and the Warren Burger. But the highlight of the year in the dining hall is Lobster Night. Once a year all the dining halls offer students the ultimate meal complete with Maine lobster, corn on the cob, baked Maine potatoes, roasted corn with crab bisque, and fresh local apple cider.
9. Men’s Ice Hockey Team
BU has one of the best Men’s Ice Hockey Team is one the best in the country. They have won twelve major conference tournament championships and 29 Beanpot tournaments. Home games at Agganis are the epitome of school spirit, complete with two student sections above the goal post, the BU band, a ton of face paint, and obviously red and white gear everywhere.
