Causes of Japanese Expansion. There were several important elements with Japanese nationalism, which developed in its modern forms from the middle og 19th century.
Seclusion from the rest of the world. Before 1864, Japan was strictly-segegrated feudal society. This feudal structure lasted longer than in the mos European statespartly as a result of seclusion.
Samurai Clans. From 1600 to 1867, Japan was ruled by the Tokugawa clan, which had become the most powerful of Japan´s various feudal samurai clans.
Tokugawa Yoshinobu. Was the last shogun. Who attemped to modernize various aspects of the Japanese system og government and its military.
Gun-boat diplomacy. The first attempts of Japan and the USA, in 1837 and 1846, at securing trading relations with Japan were beaten off by Japanese ships.
Treaty of Amity. In 1858, Japan´s government signed the treaty and commerse with the USA.
Yoshida Shoin (1839-59). He wanted the old feudal system to be transformed, etablishing greater national unity.
