Question Answer
Three types of Bonding Metallic-Mg, Na Ionic-NaCl, CaCo Covalent [simple-molecular-Ne and macro-molecular-Daimond] Bonding differ in structure and properties.
Metallic Bonding Formed between single elements from the left of the periodic table (metals) Strong electrostatic attraction of positive metal ions surrounded by sea of delocalised electrons. Properties Good thermal and electrical conductors. (delocalised electrons can flow) very strong due to electrostatic attraction between ions and electrons. malleable and ductile. very high melting and boiling points.
Ionic bonding Between metals and non metals. Between oppositely charged ions. Strong electrostatic attractioon between oppositely charged ions. Properties High melting and boiling points due to strong electrostatic force of attraction. Cannot conduct electricity when solid, when molten or in a solution conducts electricity as ions are free to move Brittle and can shatter easily.
Covalent bonding Between non metals. Sharing electrons. Shared pair of electron between two particles. Properties - Simple Molecular Strong bonds within atoms but weak bonds between molecules. relatively low melting point. Gas at room temperature. - Macromolecular Very strong bond between atoms. Very high melting and boiling point. Solid at room temperature.
