Question | Answer |
What type of cells are plant cells? | eukaryotic cells? |
What's a leaf palisade cells role? | carry out photosynthesis |
What are the main features of a leaf palisade cell? | Long, thin cells form continuous layers for maximum absorption of sunlight. Numerous chloroplasts that can move to be in the best position for absorption. Vacuole pushing chloroplasts to the edge |
What are chloroplasts function? | carry out photosynthesis |
What are the typical shape of chloroplasts and what are their main features? | Typically disc-shaped and include the chloroplasts envelope, the grana and the stroma. |
Describe the chloroplasts envelope. | Double plasma membrane surrounding organelles, it is highly specific on what it allows to enter the cell or not. |
Describe the grana. | Stacks of up to 100 structures called thylakoids, within this is chlorophyll (photosynthetic pigment). This is where the first stage of photosynthesis takes place. |
Describe the stroma. | fluid-filled structure that is where the second stage of photosynthesis takes place. Within the stroma are other structures, such as starch grains. |
How are the chloroplasts adapted for their function? | Large surface area for the attachment of chlorophyll and fluid of the stroma possess enzymes needed for the second stage of photosynthesis. |
What do chloroplasts contain? | DNA and ribosomes for the easy manufacture of proteins (enzymes) needed for photosynthesis. |
Describe the cell wall. | Consists of microfibrils of the polysaccharide cellulose embedded in a matrix. This adds to the strenght of the wall. |
Cell walls have the following features.. | -consist of a number of polysaccharides, -middle lamella marking the boundary between adjacent cells, |
The functions of the cellulose cell wall are to: | -give mechanical strength to the plant, -provide strength in order for the cell to stop bursting, -allow water to pass along it contributing to the movement of water through a plant. |
What are some differences of plant and animal cells? First plant cells.. | -cellulose cell wall -vacuole filled with sap -chloroplasts are present -starch grains are used for storage |
What are some differences of plant and animal cells? Now animal cells.. | -no chloroplasts present -only a cell surface membrane -if vacuoles are present, small and scattered about the cell -glycogen granules used for storage |
