Question Answer
What are the three types of plate margins? Destructive, Constuctive and Conservative
Destructive Plate Margins -When two plates are moving towards eachother. -Where an oceanic plate meets a continental plate, the denser oceanic plate is forced down into the mantle. This often creates volcanoes and ocean trenches. -Where two continental plates meet, the plates smash together but no crust is destroyed.
Constructive Margins -When two plates are moving away from each other. -Magma (molten rock) rises from the mantle to fill the gap and cools. Creating a new crust.
Conservative Margins -When two plates are moving sideways past eachother, or are moving the same direction but in different speeds. Crust isn't created or destroyed
Destructive Plate Margin
Conservative Plate Margin
Consructive Plate Margin
Inner Core(Yellow) Outer Core(Orange) Mantle(Red) Crust(The Outside)
What is the Earth's surface serperated into? Tectonic Plates
The centre of the earth It is called the core and it is a solid ball of iron and nickel
The Mantle it is around the core and it's semi- molten rock meaning that it moves very slowly
The crust is the outer layer of the earth and it is very thin (about 20km)
Whats floats on the mantle? Lots of slabs called tectonic plates which the crust is divided into
What are the two types of plates? Oceanic and continental
Continental crust thicker and less dense
Oceanic Crust thinner and more dense
How are the plates moving? because the rock in the mantle underneath them are moving
What are the places called where plates meet? Plate boundaries or plate margins
