Wound Closure - prevents infection and loss of fluid, promotes healing, prevents contractions, performed on day 5 - 21 following the injury, depending on the extent of the burn Autografting -permanent wound coverage -surgical removal of a thin layer of the clients unburned skin ~ applied to the excised burn wound -performed in OR w/ anesth -monitor for bleeding, bleeding can prevent adherence -if ordered, small amounts of blood or serum can be removed by gently rolling the fluid from the center of the graft to the periphery w/ a sterile gauze pad, where it can be absorbed -for large amounts of blood, can aspirate -autografts are immobilized following surgery for 3-7 days to allow time to adhere and attach to the wound bed -position the area for immobilization and elevation of the graft site to prevent movement and shearing of the graft
