Question Answer
AIChe American Institute of Chemical Engineers
CCPS Center for Chemical Process Safety
ANSI/ISA-91.00.01-2001 Identification of Emergency Shutdown Systems and Controls That Are Critical to Maintaining Safety in Process Industries
IEC International Electrotechnical Commission
IEC 61508 Functional safety of electrical/electronic/programmable electronic safety-related systems
E/E/PES Electric, Electronic and Programmable Electronic (Relay, Solid-State, and Software-Based systems)
ANSI/ISA-84.00.01-2004 Part 1, Clause 3 Acronyms and Technical Terms
Whats the difference between IEC 61511 & ANSI/ISA-84.00.01-2004 ANSI/ISA-84.00.01-2004 has a grandfather clause added to it (Part 1, Clause 1)
IEC 61508 Focused for equipment manufacturers
SIL Safety Integrity Level
SIS Safety Instrumented Systems (Referred to as "Safety Interlock Systems" by the AIChE)
IEC 61508 Functional Safety - Safety Related Systems
ISA Standard 84.00.01-2004 Functional Safety: Safety Instrumented Systems for the Process Industry Sector
NFPA 85 National Fire Protection Association Boiler and Combustion Systems Hazard Code
BMS Burner Management System
API RP 556 Recommended Practice for Instrumentation and Control Systems for Fired Heaters and Steam Generators (American Petroleum Institute, 1997)
API RP 14C Recommended Practice for Design, Installation, and Testing of Basic Surface Safety Systems for Offshore Production Platforms (American Petroleum Institute, 2001)
OSHA (29 CFR 1910.119) Process Safety Management of Highly Hazardous Chemicals
What did OSHA's letter to the ISA in 2000 state? OSHA recognizes ANSI/ISA-84.01-1996 as “a recognized and generally accepted good engineering practice for SIS” and that if a company is in compliance with the standard “the employer will be considered in compliance with OSHA PSM requirements for SIS.”
Which way are the standards moving (Prescriptive to ....) Standards are moving away from prescriptive standards and toward more performance-oriented requirements
SIF Safety Instrumented Function
BPCS Basic Process Control System
Basic Process Control System (As defined by: ANSI/ISA-91.00.01-2001) The control equipment installed to perform the normal regulatory functions for the process (e.g., PID control and sequential control)
Emergency Shutdown System (As defined by: ANSI/ISA-91.00.01-2001) Instrumentation and controls installed for the purpose of taking the process, or specific equipment in the process, to a safe state. This does not include instrumentation and controls installed for non-emergency shutdowns or routine operations.
Safety Critical Control (As defined by: ANSI/ISA-91.00.01-2001) A control whose failure to operate properly will directly result in a catastrophic release of toxic, reactive, flammable or explosive chemical
What's the Difference between Process Control and Safety Control? Process Control Systems are active and dynamic, therefore most faults are inherently self-revealing Safety Control Systems are passive or dormant, therefore many faults are not self-revealing
Demand Mode vs. Continuous Mode Demand Mode: Systems that have infrequent demands placed on them (e.g., once per year) Continuous Mode: Systems that have frequent demands placed on them (e.g., brakes)
PFD Probability of Failure on Demand
EUC Equipment Under Control
IEEE Institute of Electric and Electronic Engineers
NRC Nuclear Regulatory Commission
HAZOP HAZard and OPerability study
Alarm Systems May be used to alert the operators that some form of intervention is required on their part
SIS Safety Instrumented Systems: Automatically take a process to a safe state when specified conditions are violated, or take action to mitigate the consequences of an industrial hazard.
