Semi-Periphery - Core in decline/ Periphery on its way to becoming part of the world economic system - Weak capitalist rural economy - Farmers use share-cropping to lessen the risks -Exploited by the core
Periphery - Lack strong central government - Controlled by another state - Raw material trade to the core -Unequal trade with the core
External - Maintains own economic system outside modern world economy
World Systems Theory - Unlike Dependency theory, World System theory does not state that countries become stuck in the periphery like dependency theory, but can develop and therefore reduce disparities - Semi-peripheral countries are examples
Dependency Theory - Why some countries did not reach the same level as the west using same path; why they were forced to stay behind, why their economies did not ‘take off’ - Economy of certain countries is conditioned by the development and expansion of another economy to which the former is subjected - Flow of goods from periphery to the core
