His operas point to later Russian music with Russian folk melodies, 5/4 meter, whole tone scale. Second opera was a failuer, he renounced Russia and moved to Germany. |

Later enrolled in the conservatory and studied with Rubenstein. Brilliant orchestration, beautiful melodies and exciting rhythms. Acknowledged his own weakness in transitions. (Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Ovurture, Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, and many more important works.) |
| Sergey Rakhmoninov | (1837 - 1943) One of the finest pianists of the day. As a composer he continued Tchaikovsky's tradition into the 20th century. Composed numerous solo piano pieces and works for piano and orchestra (Rhapsody on a theme by Panini). 3 Symphonies, 3 operas, 4 piano concerti and the symphonic poem The Isle of the Dead. |
| Alexander Scraibin | (1872 - 1915) Russian pianist and composer. Little interest in Russian nationalist music. Studied with famous theorist Taneyev. Toured Europe as soloist. Fallower of Wagner, Liszt, Berloiz using their chromatic writing in highly personalized style. Evolved complex harmonic language. "Mysic Chord" Composed many piano works. |
