Question Answer
MAKING THINGS BIGGER BY: MINA TORABI
WHAT ARE MICROSCOPES USED FOR? Very small things need to be magnified or made bigger so that they can become visible to us. Scientists use microscopes to do this.
WHEN YOU HEAR MUSIC IN STEREO WHAT DOES IT MEAN? It means that information is coming from two different directions.
WHAT IS THE MAXIMUM MAGNIFICATION ACHIEVED BY LIGHT MICROSCOPES? the maximum magnification achieved by light microscopes is about x1000.
WHAT DOES ELECTRON MICROSCOPES USE TO MAKE IT MORE POWERFUL THAN LIGHT MICROSCOPES? electron microscopes use beams of tiny particles called electrons instead of light, and are able to magnify up to a million times.
WHAT ARE THE TWO TYPES OF ELECTRON MICROSCOPES, AND WHAT DO THEY STAND FOR? _transmission electron microscopes (TEM) _ scanning electron microscopes (SEM)
WHAT IS THE FIELD OF VIEW? field of view is how much you can see of the specimen when you look down a microscope.
CONTRAST TWO THINGS ABOUT TEM AND SEM. tem: specimen is very thin slice, electrons pass through specimen. sem: specimen can be anything; no need to slice, electrons reflect off surface of specimen.
CONTRAST TWO THINGS ABOUT BINOCULAR MICROSCOPE AND STEREO MICROSCOPE. binocular: provides a two-dimensional image of the specimen, maximum magnification x1000 stereo:
HOW MUCH IS A MICROMETRE? a micrometre is one-thousandth of a millimetre, or one-millionth of a metre.
ON A MICROSCOPE WHAT DOES THE MIRROR DO? the mirror directs light up through the stage and specimen.
ON A MICROSCOPE WHAT DOES THE FINE FOCUS KNOB DO? fine focus knob is used to focus the image on high power.
ON A MICROSCOPE WHAT DOES THE STAGE DO? the stage is where the specimen is placed.
ON A MICROSCOPE WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE 2 MOST IMPORTANT PARTS? -the eyepiece or ocular lens (magnifies the image) -stage (where the specimen is placed)
