Direct Democracy A system where the people themselves make key political decisions Example: Athens
Representative democracy A political system where most decisions are made by elected representatives (opposite of direct) Example: UK/US/France etc.
Representation People appoint representatives in order to represent people and make decisions on their behalf
Referendum Where people are asked to vote on a single issue In practice: Usually a yes or no answer and only one question
Legitimacy The right to exercise power (Elections enable legitimacy)

Political consent and types People consent to be governed by the system. Consent can be explicit or tacit
Pluralist democracy A democratic system where the demands an interests of many different groups are taken into consideration (Applies to parties and pressure groups)
Liberal democracy Type of democracy which emphasises the protection of individual rights and liberties, where the rule of law is followed, and where government is limited by constitutional laws
