Question Answer
Aristotle - Plato's student - Doesn't accept form world - Physical world = key to knowledge - Values experience
4 Causes 1) Material Cause : substance 2) Efficient Cause : action that makes object 3) Formal Cause : Shape/ form 4) Final Cause : Purpose/ Telos - something is good once it has reached its telos
Prime Mover Attributes - Eternal - Perfect - Immaterial/ transcendent - Thinks only about self - Necessary - No interaction with world - Divine simplicity ( without parts) - Impersonal
Why have a Prime mover? - Causuality ( cause/ effect) can't infinitely regress - Time does not decay So Time can only be this way if something in it isnt subject to change So there is an eternal substance So This is the prime mover
Critisisms 1) Contradicts theistic God 2) Doesn't explain religious Godly experiences 3) what is the point of thinking about thinking? 4) DAWKINS - 'Brute fact' argument: there is no purpose, the universe just is
