Question Answer
What is system software Any program that is beneficial to the computer in some way
What are three types of security software? Anti-virus Firewall Encryption
Give an example of disk operation software. Defragmentation
What are four types of maintenance software? Compression Automatic updates Backup Clean up tools
What does Anti-virus software do? Used to prevent, detect and remove viruses.
What do firewalls do? Detects unauthorized attempts to access the computer system and prevent them.
What is encryption used for? Scrambles data to prevent others from reading it.
What is defragmentation? Reorganizes the data to put it back in order. This improves the read and write speeds.
What does compression do? Reduces the size of files.
What does automatic updates do? Accesses the internet to check for updates and downloads them automatically.
What does backup mean? Creating a second copy of data files and settings.
What is a full backup? - Backs up all files every time - Slower when backing up - Quicker to recover files - Wastes storage
What is an incremental backup? - Uses a full backup the first time but only the parts that have changed after that - Faster when backing up - Slower to recover files - More storage efficient
What do the clean up tools do? Remove any unused items and temporary data
What is lossy compression? - Permanently removes a bit of the information to reduce the size - Slight loss of quality - Produces smaller files than lossless
What is lossless compression? -Does not lose any information - No loss of quality - Can be decompressed to it's original size - Produces larger files than lossy
What is the acronym to remember the functions of Operating Systems? MUMPUF
What is Multi-tasking? (OS) Ensures that the CPU can cope with more than one task at a time. If a program is loading slowly, the CPU will turn its attention to another process rather than waiting for it to respond. The OS organises the CPU and ensures that it is never idle.
What is User Interface? (OS) Provides a way for the user to communicate with the operating system.
What is Memory Management? (OS) Each program will have it’s own data to be stored in RAM. The OS ensures that this data is organised and that no program can change the data of another program.
What is Peripheral Management and Drivers? (OS) - Communication between computers and peripherals is controlled by drivers. This is the software that tells the computer and the peripheral how to communicate with each other. - The OS manages the peripherals and usually allows the user to make minor modifications.
What is User Management? (OS) .The OS usually allows for a number of users to be set up with their own accounts, security, settings and applications.
What is File Management? (OS) The OS sorts out where the data is stored. It allows users to create and name files, organise them in folders as well as copy and delete them.
