Asch A: To what extent pressure from social groups could cause a person to conform P: 50 male students P: Lab experiment used unambiguous task - line task seven participants were confederates one was naive participant, other was naive participant seated at the end of the room F: 32% conformity rate on average critical trials- 75% participants conformed at least once control group (no pressure to conform to confederates) - less than 1% gave wrong answer
Evaluation of Asch - Lacks ecological validity - Lacks external validity - androcentric group of participants (only used male ppts), cannot generalise to whole public - Lacks mundane realism

Milgram OBEDIENCE - LEGITIMATE AUTHORITY A: to see how far people will obey an authority figure P: 40 males 20-50 yr olds, variety of jobs P: learner was actor, teacher was naive participant, had to teach material to the learner who was strapped down with electrodes attached teacher was told to administer a shock of increasing severity for each incorrect answer in separate rooms experimenter [authoritative figure in grey lab coat] would encourage the learner to continue, even past 300v when the learner stopped shouting there were variations- some carried out in Yale, then run down office deception occurred, told ppts investigating effects of punishment on learning F: 65% went full to 450v lethal dosage not one ppt stopped at 300v laughing fits, seizures, sweating, trembling and digging nails into skin were some symptoms observed
