Question Answer
Describe the design of an OROS controlled release tablet (type used in Adalat OROS)
Describe the design of an insoluble matrix tablet (used to produced controlled/extended/sustained release) drug is dispersed in matrix such as wax or polymer that does not dissolve, fluid permeates in and dissolves drug which leeches out (like a sponge)
Cardizem CD capsules are controlled release and are capsules with beads inside. Explain how controlled release is produced Beads in capsule have a polymer membrane which does not dissolve. Fluid enters through this and dissolve drug which diffuses out
Some cardiovascular drugs are sustained/extended release tablets that are hydrophilic matrix design. Explain how extended/sustained release is produced in this design drug is compressed in mix with hydrophilic polymer which swells/gels in contact with fluid. fluid diffuses across gel and dissolves drug and drug then diffuses out, also some erosion
