Question Answer
What are the types of surface water? Rivers, Dams, Lakes, Wetlands
What is the difference between a lake and dam? A lake is a naturally occurring body of water whereas a dam is man-made.
Define surface water Surface water - Water which occurs on the surface of the earth and is easily accessible
Define the types of surface water Rivers - A moving body of fresh water. Dams - An artificial body of surface water Lakes - A naturally occurring body of surface water Wetlands - a continually waterlogged area such as swamps, billabongs, sat marches and mangroves
Define ground water Any water which is beneath the Earth’s surface
An aquifer is a ______ rock? Permeable / porous
The water table refers to... The upper surface of ground water
Define the types of ground water. Ground water - Any water which is beneath the Earth’s surface Aquifer - Ground water flows through aquifers. Aquifers are areas of permeable rock that are saturated with water. If an aquifer is surrounded in impermeable rock, the water is unable to escape. Artesian water - Ground water stored in aquifers Bore water - underground water that must be pumped to the surface if it is to be used (water from wells)
When were level 1 water wise restrictions introduced and why? It was introduced on 1 October 2003 when combined dam storage levels reached 55%
What were the level 1 water restrictions? 1) No watering systems or sprinklers between 8 am and 8 pm (excluding drip irrigation). 2) No hosing of hard surfaces at any time except as required by law.
Saltwater intrusion refers to...? when the human removal of ground water causes salt water to enter aquifers that previously held fresh water.
Outline one way in which saltwater intrusion can be reduced By monitoring how much fresh water can be extracted from the ground before it becomes unsafe
When were level 2 water restrictions introduced and why? On 1 June 2004 when combined dam storage levels dropped below 50%.
When were level 3 water restrictions introduced and why? On 1 June 2005 when combined dam storage levels dropped below 40%
Which level of government has imposed these restrictions? State
What causes ground water pollution? Pollutants from human activities seeps into the ground and moves through aquifers. Sources of pollution include: agriculture, waste disposal and industry.
