What is a “position of safety”? A position of safety is a place where it is safe to stand when a train is passing
What is the minimum position of safety a line with a maximum speed of 100 mph? 4 feet / 1.25 metres
Where is the safest place walk to when on or near the line, and where would you find details published? An Authorised walking route. Details are found in the Hazard Directory, SWT authorised walking route publication and at train crew signing on points
What does a limited clearance warning sign mean? There is no position of safety on this side of the railway for the length of the structure. Do not pass the sign if trains are approaching.
What does a "No Refuges" sign mean? There are no positions of safety or refuges on this side of the railway for the length of the structure however there are on the opposite side of the railway line.
When would you move out of a position of safety? When safe to do so and no other trains are approaching.
Where would you find Track Circuit Operating Clips stored and what do they do? Found in driving cabs. Short circuit the two running rails together and force the signal controlling the section to display a red aspect. Indicates section occupied in the controlling signal box.
How would you stop a train in an emergency? Red flag Red light Both arms raised above the head Wave any light vigorously Contact signaller
