There are nine aspects of postmodernism: - Eclecticism - Intertextuality - Parody - Bricolage - Acts against modernism - Nostalgic - Narcissistic - An active audience - Hyper-conscious | Eclecticism: Creating something from a wide range of influence techniques from other forms of media |
Intertextuality: Where aspects of media are borrowed from other forms of media. E.G: Spy Kids contains borrowed ideas from the James Bond film franchise. | Parody: A humorous reference to another media text. E.G. Family Guy did a parody episode of Star Wars |
Bricolage: Where works are constructed with whatever materials are available. E.G The workers on 'The Hunt for Gollum' used scaffolding and bits of recycled metal to create their micro budget film. | Acts against modernism: Postmodernists are skeptic about the ideas of the traditional modernist, specifically about; progress, objectivity, reason, certainty, personal identity and grand narrative. |
Nostagic: Where the past is celebrated, and references to more older texts are used. E.G.The famous phrase "you were only meant to blow the bloody doors off," from The Italian Job is often reference in factual TV shows such as Top Gear. | Narcissistic: An obsession about one's self. |
An active audience: The assertion that meaning and experience can only be created by the individual and cannot be made objective by an author or narrator; an assumption of an intelligent and and active audience. | Hyper-concious: Aware of itself, where the media product dissolves the fourth wall. |
