| WAN | Wide Area Network. While LANs operate over small distances, WANs are used to link LANs together that are separated by anything from 10 meters to thousands of miles. |
| LAN | Local Area Network. LANs are used for high speed transmissions over a restricted distance. signals may need to be boosted if the LAN is too small. |
| PAN | Personal Area Networks. A PAN is a computer network organised around an individual person. PANs often involve mobile computers and smartphones. |
| VPN | Virtual Private Network. A VPN is a cheaper alternative to a WAN and use dedicated Packet-Switched links to interconnect two or more LANs . This creates a VPN, which interconnects several LANs by using the existing internet infrastructure. |
