Question Answer
What is the advantage of the swivel-base over the solid-base vise? Allows vise to be swung into any circular position
How may finished work be held in a vise without the surface being marred or damaged? -use jaw caps made of brass, aluminum, or copper
Describe the most common hammer used by a machinist. Ball-peen hammer
For what purpose are soft-face hammers used? --used in assembling or dismantling parts so the finished surface of the work will not be marred; made ofplastic, copper, lead
State three safety rules that should be observed when using a hammer? 1. Handle is solid and not cracked 2. Head is tight on handle, with proper wedge 3. No grease 4. Never strike tow handle faces together, because of chips
List three important ways to take care of a screwdriver. 1. Choose correct size 2. Do not use as pry, chisel, or wedge 3. When tip of a standard one is worn or broken it should be redressed
Explain the procedure for regrinding the tip of a screwdriver blade. 1. Make the sides of the blade slightly concave by holding the side of the blade tangential to the periphery of the grinding wheel 2. Grind and equal amount off each side of the blade 3. Retain original taper, width, and thickness 4. Grind the end square with the centerline of the blade 5. Remove minium metal so you do not go past hardened zone and put tip cold water so as not to draw the temper from the blade
List two precautions that should be observed in using a Phillips screwdriver 1. Too small a screwdriver will damage the tip and the recess in the screw head 2. Screwdriver should be held firmly in recess and square with the screw
Why are open ended wrenches offset about 15 degrees to the handle? -to permit turning the nut or bolt head in limited space by "flopping" the wrench
Why is a properly sized box wrench preferred to other types of wrenches? -because it cannot slip when the proper size is used
What advantages does a socket wrench have over a box wrench? -when nuts or bolts must be tightened to within certain limits to prevent warping, socket wrenches can be used in conjunction with torque-wrench handle -metric as well as imperial ?????
What precaution should be observed when using an adjustable wrench? --this type of wrench can slip when not properly adjusted to the flats of the nut, can lead to injury and damage to corners of the nut. -but good for odd sized nuts
What will happen if excess pressure is applied to an adjustable wrench or pressure applied to the wrong jaw? -wrench can slip -this type of wrench can slip when not properly adjusted to the flats of the nut, can lead to injury and damage to corners of the nut. ??????
What is the cross-sectional shape of an Allen wrench and for what purposes is an Allen wrench used? -hexagonal shape -fit into recesses of socket head setscrews -very small heads, hard to reach places
Where is a hook pin spanner used? -used on the circumference of a round nut -pin of the spanner fits into a hole int he periphery of the nut
State four useful hints for using any wrench. 1. Always use wrench that fits the nut or bolt properly to stop slippage 2. When possible, always pull instead of push 3. Be sure the nut is fully in wrench jaw 4. Put drop of oil on the threads when assembling a bolt to ensure easier removal later 5.Use jerks instead of constant pulls
Name four types of pliers and state one use for each. -Slip joint pliers: used when small holes must be drilled or for twisting small light materials -Side-cutting pliers: mainly for cutting, gripping, and bending of small diameters -Needle-nose pliers: holding very small parts, and bending and forming wire -Diagonal cutter: solely for cutting wire and small pieces of soft metal
What advantages do vise grips have over other types of pliers? -extremely high gripping power because of adjustable lever action -screw in handle allows adjustment -available in many jaws
Side cutting pliers: -small diameter (1/8 inch or less) rods or wires
Vise grip pliers: -extremely high gripping power because of adjustable lever action -screw in handle allows adjustment -available in many jaws
-Slip joint pliers: used when small holes must be drilled or for twisting small light materials
Diagonal cutter: solely for cutting wire and small pieces of soft metal
Needle-nose pliers: holding very small parts, and bending and forming wire
