The Mandate of Heaven - What does this term mean? The Mandate of heaven refers to the system the Chinese believed in referring to the emperors. The mandate of heaven was more or less approval from the gods to be emperor. If the emperor failed to protect the country and people from floods, droughts, famine, war and other disasters it was said that they had lost the mandate of heaven and could be overthrown and replaced.
How was life difficult for Peasants? In Ancient china life was difficult for peasants because they worked hard for very little pay, a lot of them were farmers and a lot of their crops were distributed between society as well as if you worked on someone else’s land you would have to give them part of your crop as well.
How could you become a slave in Ancient China? In Ancient China you could become a slave if you were captured as a prisoner of war, you were sold by your parents, or if your mother was a slave.
Which Dynasty built the Great Wall of China? The Great wall was actually created by joining the walls that other dynasties had built to protect from invasion from each other. The order to join them was given in the Qin Dynasty.
Why was the Great Wall built? The Great wall was said to have been built to protect China from the Huns in the north but the peasants also saw this as a way to keep the Chinese people in.
What products did traders from other countries bring across the Silk Road to sell in China? Nuts, dyes, dried fruit, cloth, gold, grapevines, dates, Jade, Roman glassware.
What item did the Chinese have to sell to other countries which was so valuable. Silk, Tea, Alcohol, Paper, Porcelain, Gunpowder, Spices, Metals.
What were the names of some of the countries that The Silk Road ran through? China, Tibet, Pakistan, India, Persia, the Roman Empire, central Asia, Kazakhstan.
What changes were made under the Han Dynasty? If commuting taxes were paid, army conscription and forced 1 month labour could be avoided. Farmers were allowed to own land. They restored peace and prosperity. They reduced the size of the army. They reduced the taxes that peasants needed to pay. They encouraged farming.
What were some of the Qin Dynasty’s major achievements which were to last into the 20th Century? The Qin Dynasty United the six warring states of China, built several massive architectural wonders including the tomb of the first emperor and the great wall of china, created a central system of government and created the same calendar, writing, measurements and currency.
Emperor Qin Shihuang caused his own death in his desire to achieve everlasting life. How did this happen? Although the emperor wanted everlasting life he ended up killing himself. This is because he thought that mercury, a poisonous liquid, was the elixir of immortality so he constantly drank it.

How did the emperor Qin Shihuang make sure there were no threats to his power? All books were taken, weapons were confiscated, and people were forced to live in his capital so that they could be watched and banished the nobles to encourage peasants.
