What age is primary socialisation? 0 to 5 years old
What is canalisation? When children are channelled to certain toys and activities by their parents.
Verbal Appellations The way we talk to children can show them what their gender is.
What is the dominant culture? This is the main culture of a society which is generally shared by the majority of people.
What do post modernists believe in? They believe that there is increasing individualism. communitarism is diminished.
What do functionalists believe? If we share beliefs, values and norms with those in society, we are able to work together.
What do feminists believe? See culture as maintaining the status quo of patriarchal society.
What is the structural approach? That the agencies of socialisation manipulated people in identities. It ignores free will.
What is the social action approach? Focus on the individual and their interpretation and interaction with the world around them.
"Looking glass-self" As we interact with other people, we develop sense of what others think of us.
Impression management Gottsman: all the world is a stage- we use props and costumes to manage the impression we give to other people.
Labelling Theory- Becker When someone goes against the expected norms and values, they are labelled as a "deviant".
What might a "deviant" end up doing? May turn to others with deviant identity and create a subculture which leads to the "self fulfilling prophecy".
