Act and Scene Definition + what they signify Act - major structural division for a play. Scene - sub-divisions within. Acts and scenes change to show a change in time or setting.
Denouement Definition How the tangled elements of a plot are untied.
Discourse Marker Definition + Example A word or phrase which marks the divisions between communication e.g. 'actually', 'basically', 'okay'.
Dramatic Irony Definition The term used when an audience or reader is aware of something that at least one character is not aware of.
First-person narration Definition A type of narrative where the protagonist makes use of 'I' and personal pronouns when narrating.
Flashback Definition An interruption of a chronological sequence by a past event.
Foreshadowing Definition Literary technique whereby writers leave clues for what will happen later in the story.
Multiple Narration Definition When a story is told/written by more than one person.
Omniscient Narrator Definition When the narrator takes on an omniscient or 'all-knowing' stance.
Plot Definition A sequence of events which make up the main part of a narrative.
Resolution Definition A term for the way a plot is sorted out - this usually happens at the end of a narrative/book/play/etc.
