Question Answer
Chapter 1 Material Properties
What are Mechanical properties How objects reply to a force
What is meant by the strength of a material It is its ability to withstand an applied force without breaking or permanently bending
Mechanical properties What does this mean? * Properties of the material, including Str, Har, Dur, Dens, Toug,Brit, Mall, Duc-icity, Elasticity
Name 5 types of strengths Bending, compression, sheer, tension, Tortion (explain page 10) give examples
What is durability To resist wear and tear
When is a acryilic not brittle Acryilic is less brittle unless it is heated then it can be moulded
Important Properties when shaping and moulding products are malleability, elasisity, ductability. What does Malleability Malleability is where materials can be permanently deformed if hammered rolled or pressed
Ductability Materials ability to be cold deformed by being pulled or pencilled, Heat changes things
Physical Properties 1
What are physical properties Unaltered by application force or heat this is seen in some plastics
What is fusability-what process is it important in Fusability is where something is heated into a liquid and it is used in smelting and fabrication
What does fabrication mean Fabrication is the joining together of pieces weather or not they are the same material
What does insulator mean Where heat is brought into the material and does not pass through, poor conducter ie, plastic cup
Name good electrical conductors and good insulators Gold, silver, copper/cotten, cermic, wood, plastic
What is a semi-conductor what does it meani.e silicon i.e silicon is usually a poor conductor but on some circumstances it allowes a current to flow
What is mechanical properties and what is physical properties Refer to page 10 and 11
