Question | Answer |
What is the wave equation? | Speed of wave= frequency + wavelength v= f x λ |
What do waves do? | waves transfer energy from one point to another, but they do not transfer matter. |
What is a transverse wave? | A wave in which the particles vibrate at 90' direction in which the wave is travelling. Eg water or electromagnetic waves |
What is a longitudinal wave? | A wave which the particles vibrate parallel to the direction in which the wave is travelling. Eg sound or slinky |
What is amplitude? | the greatest displacement of the wave from its undisturbed position measured in metres. |
What is Frequency? | The number of complete waves passing a fixed point in one second. Measured in Hertz Hz |
What is wavelength? | the distance between two consecutive crests or troughs given te symbol λ. measured in metres. |
What happens when waves travel from deep to shallow water? | - the waves slow down - the wavelength of the waves decreases - the frequency of the waves is unchanged |
What happens during Wave reflection? | - the angle of incidence is always equal to the angle of reflection - the wavelengths of the incident and reflected waves are equal - there is a continuity of the incident and reflected waves at the barrier. -the frequency's/speed of the incident and reflected waves are equal. -the angle between a wave front and the direction is always 90' |
What frequency can humans hear at? | Between 20Hz and 20 000Hz |
How can hearing be damaged? | 1. too much earwax 2. Damage to the auditory nerve 3. illness or infection 4. old age |
How does sound travel? | sound travels through materials as a longitudinal wave as energy passes from molecule to molecule. the sound energy passes from particle to particle which is why sound can travel through a vacuum where there is no particles |
what is ultra sound? | sound that is above a frequency of 20 000Hz and cant be heard by humans. |
