Question Answer
How can Scientists explain and control the properties of Compounds and Elements? Scientists can explain and control the properties of compounds and elements by understanding the atoms that make up them.
What is an atom? Atoms make up everything around you, but they are so small to see with the naked eye.
How do scientists see atoms? Scientists use a special powerful microscope called the scanning tunnelling microscope or "STM" to see atoms.
What is the atomic theory of matter? Democritus believed that matter was composed of fundamentally indivisible particles, called "atomos" or "atoms"
What is a scientific model ? A scientific model is a simplified idea that can be used to help make predictions or test assumptions.
Who was John Dalton ? John Dalton is considered to be the first person to propose the fundamental ideas behind the modern atomic theory of matter.
What are the four theories of matter that Dalton proposed? NEXT____________________
(1) -All matter is composed of indivisible particles called atoms
(2) -Elements are made up of only one type of atom.
(3) -Compounds are made up of more than one type of atom.
(4) -Atoms cannot be created or destroyed but can be rearranged to form different substances.
How many atoms are known and what does each atom have? There are 117 known atoms, all atoms have a unique set of characteristics known as properties.
Are atoms heavy solid balls? if not, then what are they? No, Atoms are complicated internal structure, it's the internal structure that gives each element its properties.
What are the subatomic particles?
How do Protons, Neutrons, and Electrons make up an atom ?
What is a mass number? The number of protons and neutrons in an atom is called the mass number.
Identify the number of neutrons in this atomic symbol. <-------------------- mass number(12) - atomic number(6) = number of neutrons = 6 Answer is 6 <------------
What are electron shells? Electron shells are areas around the atom in which electrons spin.
Why do the electrons in an atom don't fly off? This is because the electrons are negatively charged and the protons are positively charged, therefore, they attract each other like the opposite poles of magnet
If the nucleus of an atom was the size of a golf ball, then what would be the size of the electron cloud? ANSWER= The size of a .... ----->
