Question Answer
Background Not adhering can be linked to the health belief model → e.g. if costs of medication outweighs the benefits Explains why some refuse life-saving treatment - cost of reduced standard of living outweighs benefit of living slightly longer
Background: Bulpitt et. al Study on males with hypertension - costs outweighed benefit of lowering blood pressure - common cost was erectile dysfunction - no short-term effects of high blood pressure - BUT long-term it is linked with Strokes
Aim To review research on adherence in hypertensive patients
Sample Review Articles → problems with taking drugs for high blood pressure
Procedure Research analysed to identify physical and psychological effects of the treatment e.g. work, physical wellbeing, hobbies, etc.
Results Found anti-hypertensive medication can have many side effects → Physical reactions: - = sleepiness = dizziness = lack of sexual functioning = cognitive functions reduced ↓ So work and hobbies are curtailed
Results: Curb et. al 8% of males discontinued treatment due to sexual problems
Results: Medical Research Council 15% of patients withdraw due to side effects of medication
