Substance Change | Hamza Ahmed Year 8 |
What is physical change? | A change of shape or form, expansion and contraction, change of state or mixing substances |
What are some examples of changing shape or form ? | Breaking, bending, stretching, crushing, twisting or compression |
What is expansion? | The volume of the object increases but the density decreases |
What is contraction? | Density of object increases but the density decreases |
What are the changes of state? | Melting, evaporation, condensation and freezing |
What is melting? | Change from solid to liquid |
What is evaporation? | Change from liquid to gas |
What is condensation? | Change from gas to liquid |
What is freezing? | Change from liquid to solid |
What is chemical change? | Chemical change is when a new substance is made |
How can you identify a chemical change? | Seeing a change in colour, production of gas, seeing a new solid forming in a clear solution or seeing a light or feeling a change in temperature |
Example of change in colour | Ripening apples |
Example of gas production | Smell from rotten egg |
Example of seeing a new solid | Calcium carbonate is formed when CO2 is bubbled through limewater |
Example of seeing light or change in temperature | Fireworks give off light and temperature |
What is sublimation? | Change from solid to gas |
What is deposition? | Change from gas to solid |
